Un 69% llevará a cabo procesos de mejora de la eficiencia en costes y solo un 27% está seguro de contar con el talento adecuado para ejecutar su estrategia en los próximos tres años.

Brazil's deficient urban public transport infrastructure is holding back its economic potential. Wasted time and fuel consumed in traffic congestion cost the economy of São Paulo nearly US$20bn in 2008, about 10% of its GDP, according to some estimates. Preparations for the FIFA 2014 football World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics include ambitious investments in urban transport infrastructure but many of the planned projects are behind schedule. Even so, through Private-Public Partnerships (PPPs), the private sector is providing much-needed resources and implementing new technologies such as driverless subways.

A new report by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited's (DTTL) Global Manufacturing Industry Group, 2011 Midyear outlook for the global aerospace and defense sector, indicates a sense of unease in defense and optimism in commercial aerospace. According to the report, it is anticipated that there will be an upswing in sales and production in commercial aircraft, principally due to the popularity of single-aisle aircrafts, for which rate increases have been announced. With the introduction of new single-aisle manufacturers, as well as next generation twin-aisle commercial aircraft products, suppliers worldwide are expected to increase production.

Triplicar la cuota de mercado del transporte de mercancías por ferrocarril en España podría ahorrar entre 233 y 323 millones de euros al año sólo en costes externos -ruido, contaminación, accidentalidad, entre otros-. Si sumáramos, además, los ahorros derivados de un menor consumo de energía primaria esta cantidad sería sensiblemente mayor, según el informe Tomando la Vía hacia un Transporte de Mercancías Inteligente, elaborado por PwC.

La visión de aquí a 2050 expone de qué modo y en qué sectores deben establecerse las prioridades europeas en materia de investigación, con el fin de aportar un claro valor añadido comunitario y preservar el crecimiento y la competitividad de la UE a escala mundial, respondiendo al mismo tiempo a las necesidades del mercado y a los desafíos medioambientales y energéticos.

El momento en que aparece este número de Cuadernos Económicos sobre la evaluación económica de las infraestructuras de transporte no puede ser más oportuno. La idea inicial de la que surgió este monográfico fue la de presentar una panorámica de la investigación actual en materia de análisis coste-beneficio en el área de transporte, pero la coyuntura económica nos ha mostrado de forma dramática la importancia del mensaje de los economistas sobre el coste de oportunidad de los recursos públicos y sobre la irracionalidad (y la irresponsabilidad) que  supone destinar dinero de los contribuyentes a obras de ingeniería civil cuyo beneficio social esperado es inferior a su coste social.

En los próximos veinte años, financiar el mantenimiento de las infraestructuras ya existentes será más difícil que captar inversiones para la construcción de nuevas infraestructuras. Esta es una de las principales conclusiones del informe Transporte y Logística 2030, elaborado a partir de la opinión de 104 expertos de 29 países de todo el mundo (incluida España).

The scenario study on the European airline industry focuses particularly on network carriers. Roland Berger has developed four scenarios for the industry in the year 2015 based on two key uncertain developments and important industry trends. Will low-cost airlines operate all intra-European flights by 2015? Will an ongoing economic crisis permanently change customer requirements and demand for air travel? Are China, India or the countries of South America the major growth markets for traditional European network carriers like Lufthansa, British Airways or Air France? Or will these companies continue to grow strongly in the international arena based on their solid European network and customer base? In this study, they aim to provide answers to these questions and they show implications for managing airline companies today in the year 2010.

Alternative fuels are the ultimate solution to decarbonise transport, by gradually substituting the fossil energy sources, which are responsible for the CO2 emissions of transport. Other measures, such as transport efficiency improvements and transport volume management, play an important supporting role.
